Do You Really Have to Cleanse Your Crystals?
Updated: 3 days ago

If you're new to crystals, you may have heard that you have to cleanse them before and after using them. But here's the truth:
there is no written rule that says you have to.
Crystal cleansing is a personal practice. Some people love cleansing their stones regularly, while others simply pick up a crystal and start working with it. There's no right or wrong way; it's what you feel drawn to do.
Why Do People Cleanse Crystals?
Many crystal lovers believe crystals can absorb or hold onto energy from the people, places, and experiences around them. Cleansing is a way of energetically refreshing a stone and creating a clean slate.
For some, it can also be a meaningful ritual - a moment to slow down, set an intention, and reconnect with the crystal they are working with.
Cleansing can be especially nice when:
You've recently purchased or received a crystal.
Your crystal has been handled by many people.
You've been using it during emotional or energetically heavy times.
You have used it during a healing session with a client.
You simply feel like your crystal needs a little refresh.
You want to reset your intention and reconnect with it.
Examples of Cleansing Methods:

Smudging with Sage or Palo Santo - Light the sage or Palo Santo and let the smoke waft over your crystal to clear away and stagnant energy.
Moonlight - Place your crystals under the light of a full moon to recharge and cleanse them.
Sound Cleansing - Using a singing bowl or tuning forks to create sound vibrations that cleanse the crystal's energy.
Salt Cleansing - Place your crystal in a bowl of sea salt (avoid this method for softer stones like Selenite).
And What If You Don't Cleanse Them?
That's completely okay, too.
You don't need to feel like you're doing something wrong if cleansing isn't part of your practice. You
can simply enjoy your crystals, carry them with you, mediate with them, decorate your space with them in any way that feels meaningful to you.
Your own intuition is your best guide.
If a crystal feels like it needs a refresh, cleanse it. If it doesn't, don't feel pressured to.
And remember - different crystals can have different cleansing preferences. Some methods, such as water or sunlight, aren't suitable for every stone. For example:
Softer stones like Selenite should not go in water as they can dissolve.
Colored stones like Amethyst should not sit in direct sunlight for long, as their color can fade.
It's always worth checking the properties of your crystal before choosing a cleansing method.
At the end of the day, crystals are meant to be enjoyed. Find the rituals and practices that feel good to you and let your relationship with your stones be your guide.
Your practice. Your intuition. Your crystals.
